The former Italian concession — European-style cafés and bars that shine at night.
Niren Zhang clay figures, Yangliuqing New Year prints and Guoren Zhang — folk Tianjin in one street.
A Ferris wheel built on a bridge — 28 minutes over the river with both banks in view.
The “palace on the sea” — a free world-class ocean museum; top family pick.
A French villa clad in 700 million antique porcelain shards — wonder and controversy in one.
Tianjin's character is written into its nickname “Gengdu” (Comedy Capital) — a port city forged by grain shipping and treaty-port trade that digested East–West collision into humor. Crosstalk is a way of life; an afternoon at Mingliu or Qianxiangyi with tea and sunflower seeds says it all.
Nine foreign concessions left a villa district that shelters alongside the old Chinese quarter: the Five Avenues once housed retired politicians and industrialists; today it is a backdrop for cafés and wedding photos. Rent a bike and drift — more vivid than any museum.
Tianjin takes breakfast seriously — “hard breakfast”: jianbing guozi must have crispy baocui, guobacai comes with sesame flatbread, savory doufunao… Locals are firmly against adding lettuce or ham to jianbing; order like a local and you're halfway in.
Tianjin's pride lives at the breakfast stall: beyond jianbing and guobacai there is zengbeng carp and the robust Lu school of cooking.
