Culture

Culture & local life

Hong Kong is the living lab of East-West common law and herbal tea coexisting; race days and Wong Tai Sin each draw their crowds. The pace is fast, but cha chaan teng “table-sharing” and the efficiency of “mm-goi” are the fastest way in.

Hong Kong dining is a century of hybrid experiment: pineapple bun with cold butter, silk-stocking milk tea, tongue-tip rice plates — the cha chaan teng is the city's living room, and Michelin street food (Tim Ho Wan) proves cheap and good coexist.

From Bruce Lee to Wong Kar-wai, the movies are the city's lingua franca. The pilgrimage runs Chungking Mansions, Temple Street and Duddell Street's steps — a walking filmography between neon and tong-lau.

Local know-how

  • Escalators: stand right, walk left; keep moving
  • Table-sharing (“tap toi”) is normal; “dong ling cha, jau tim” is insider ordering
  • No eating on the MTR — fines apply
  • Temples (Wong Tai Sin/Che Kung): free incense, keep quiet at divination
