The prototype of “bridges, water and homes” — stay overnight to reclaim the town from day-trippers.
The Purple Mountain ensemble — Republican and Ming China in dialogue under plane-tree avenues.
The immersive Republic-era street and jade burial suit — one of China's three great museums.
“Twenty-four bridges in moonlit night” — lake gardens and the Four Seasons rockery of Ge Garden.
The finest corner of Lake Tai — the cherry valley in late March is Jiangnan spring's summit.
Jiangsu holds China's densest literary aura: 13 national historical-cultural cities (most of any province), 60-odd Suzhou zhuangyuan scholars, ten dynasties of capitals at Nanjing. History here lives in dailies — the soft Suzhou dialect, Huaiyang knife-work, gardens that unfold a scene per step.
Wu (southern Jiangsu) and Jianghuai (northern) cultures differ subtly: Suzhou refinement is lived (pingtan ballads, Biluochun tea, seasonal eating), Yangzhou refinement is indulgent (“skin of water in the morning, water of skin at night” — morning tea and bathhouses). Two kinds of slow, two days apart.
The Grand Canal runs the province's spine with Yangzhou at the origin. A short canal cruise past granaries-turned-creative-parks makes “canal is destiny” tangible — this water carried six centuries of imperial wealth.
China's most refined table: Huaiyang cuisine (state-banquet pedigree) and sweet Su classics, with Yangzhou morning tea as an institution.
The four last checks before departure: what to wear, where to stay, how to get around, what to bring home.
