Culture

Culture & local life

Sichuan's keyword is “bashi” (comfortable) — life elevated to art: ¥20 covered-bowl tea all day at Renmin Park, mahjong as white noise, “never enter Sichuan young” is a warning against exactly this gravity. Chengdu routinely tops China's happiness charts.

Ancient Shu is the deep code: Sanxingdui's bronze masks with protruding eyes and Jinsha's gold sun-bird — a civilization parallel to the Central Plain with astonishing imagination. The 2023 Sanxingdui new hall turned the “duidui” merch into bestsellers.

West Sichuan is a double plateau of geography and culture: tea-horse porters, Danba watchtower villages, Sertar's red hills — Tibetan culture intact in the folds of the Hengduan. Prayer wheels and butter tea sit a few hours' drive from hotpot Chengdu — two worlds.

Local know-how

  • Tibetan areas: clockwise kora, no photos in halls, never approach sky-burial sites
  • Tea + ear-cleaning is the local spa — lean back and enjoy
  • Ordering yuanyang (half-mild) hotpot costs no face; locals do it too
Special Notes

Special notes & precautions

⚠ Altitude sickness is realDaocheng (3,700 m+), Sertar (4,000 m+) and friends: sleep well beforehand, consider hongjingtian/oxygen, skip showers and exertion the first 48 h; descend with headache/vomiting. Kids and cardiopulmonary patients need medical sign-off.
⚠ Rainy-season roadsJuly–August rockfall and landslides close G318 stretches temporarily — check before driving, avoid night runs.
⚠ Real-name capsPanda base, Jiuzhaigou etc. cap daily entries: book 3–7 days ahead with passport details exactly right.
✓ Pandas: early, not lateBe at opening, head straight to Moon Nursery — 7:30–9:00 is feeding; by 10 am most bears are asleep.
✓ The classic west loop, 8 daysChengdu — Siguniang — Danba — Xinduqiao — Daocheng Yading — Litang — Kangding — Chengdu: a rising altitude ladder and autumn's ceiling.
