Culture & local life

Recalibrate your sense of scale: 1.66 million km², a sixth of China. “North for scenery, south for culture” is law one. In Kashgar's century teahouse, elders sit cross-legged to the twelve muqam — a UNESCO masterpiece ranked with the Forbidden City.

The Silk Road's branches fan across the Tian Shan: Kucha's caves, Gaochang's ruins, Loulan's legend — the museum's “Loulan Beauty” and Kashgar's coppersmith bazaar are two chapters of the same Eurasian exchange.

Xinjiang cooking is the triumph of carbs and cumin: dapanji, laghman and baked buns built for distances; and the fruit sweetness is geography — 16-hour sun and day-night splits make “Turpan grapes, Hami melons” taste-law.
