Culture

Culture & local life

Travelling Tibet is a double game of “adapt to altitude, understand faith”: vajrayana saturates the details — clockwise wheels, five-colored flags, full-body prostrations. One lap of Barkhor with the pilgrims teaches more than any guidebook.

Hospitality is concrete: hada for honor, butter tea and tsampa as energy and etiquette. Receive the scarf with bowed head and both hands; if butter tea isn't yours, pour less and sip slow — but accepting the first cup is respect.

Tsangyang Gyatso's poems and the tea-horse salt caravans are Tibet's soft half; the other half is the plateau's honesty — always put the body's truth ahead of the itinerary's perfection. Slower, then slower again.

Local know-how

  • Monasteries: clockwise kora; no photos in halls; silent at debates
  • Sky-burial sites are sacred — absolutely no visiting or photographing
  • Don't remove or topple mani stones; never step on prayer flags
  • Ask before photographing Tibetans, pilgrims especially; some settings carry a fee
Special Notes

Special notes & precautions

⚠ Altitude sickness is issue #1From Lhasa's 3,650 m: sleep well before arrival, no showers or exertion for 48 h, hydrate, skip alcohol. Ibuprofen (headache) and acetazolamide (with medical advice) help; severe headache/vomiting/confusion = descend now. Kids and cardiopulmonary patients need medical clearance.
⚠ PermitsForeign nationals need the Tibet Travel Permit (via a licensed agency); Everest/Ngari and some Shannan zones add border permits. HK/Macao/Taiwan rules differ — confirm with a qualified agency.
⚠ Peak bookingsPotala summer tickets vanish instantly: official channel, and beware scalpers. Everest vehicles and lodging 2+ weeks out.
✓ Train in for acclimatizationQinghai–Tibet rail (Xining–Lhasa, 21 h): gradual altitude with oxygen-enriched cars — and Kekexili's antelope as a bonus.
✓ Oxygen & med kitCanned oxygen (supermarkets in Lhasa), glucose, ibuprofen, cold meds (a plateau cold is dangerous — bring enough); “fear cold more than fear high” — pack down in every season.
Food

Eating in Tibet

Plateau energetics: butter tea, tsampa, yak meat and slow afternoons in sweet-tea houses — plus China's most authentic Sichuanese in Lhasa.

Butter tea (酥油茶) · Churned brick tea, butter and salt — daily anti-cold, anti-AMS fuel Tsampa (糌粑) · Roasted barley kneaded with tea and butter Tibetan noodles & sweet tea (藏面·甜茶) · Guangming Sweet Tea House: a pot, an afternoon Yak meat (牦牛肉) · Air-dried or hotpot — the plateau's protein Nyingchi stone-pot chicken (石锅鸡) · Motuo soapstone pot with matsutake — peach season's match Yogurt & barley wine (酸奶·青稞酒) · Yak yogurt is fiercely sour (add sugar); the wine sips light
  • Meat-and-dairy heavy; Lhasa offers Sichuan veg and Nepali veg curries
  • Smaller, more frequent meals aid sleep at altitude
  • Alcohol worsens AMS — strictly off the menu the first days
