Culture

Culture & local life

Zhejiang is Jiangnan's source code: each West Lake scene is a Song lyric, Tiantai closes the Tang poetry road, and Xie Lingyun invented landscape poetry here. The best way to travel Zhejiang is slowly — an afternoon at a lakeside tea house beats ten checkmarks.

The other face is commercial DNA: Yiwu commodities, Wenzhou merchants, Wuzhen's internet conference — this province industrialized “something from nothing.” Wuzhen itself is the case study: a faded canal town reborn as a world theatre festival and living heritage sample.

Maritime Zhejiang is under-visited: Zhoushan is China's largest fishery — Shenjiamen night stalls sell seafood by the basin; after the September season opens, hairtail and swimming crabs are absurdly cheap. Mazu faith and fishermen's chants live on.

Local know-how

  • Temples: enter via side doors, no Buddha photos, incense usually temple-provided
  • Tea farmers: tasting is process, no obligation — but don't bargain hard
  • Island seafood: weighed live — settle prices before cooking
Special Notes

Special notes & precautions

⚠ Typhoon-season islandsJuly–September typhoons stop ferries to Putuoshan and Dongji — keep a buffer day and watch marine warnings.
⚠ West Lake crowd controlBroken Bridge flows go one-way on peaks; fountain shows need reservations; rain and dawn are the lake's gifts.
⚠ Summer heatHangzhou feels like 40°C+ in July–August — the causeways are exposed; carry water and sun gear.
✓ The West Lake dayDawn at Broken Bridge — White Causeway — Solitary Hill — lunch at Louwailou — afternoon Su Causeway — sunset reds from Leifeng Pagoda. Public bikes double the reach.
✓ Sleep inside Wuzhen XizhaIn-town stays include re-entry: the water town at 11 pm and 7 am is yours alone — the value secret.
Food

Eating in Zhejiang

Zhejiang eats clean and fresh: Hangzhou's polish, Ningbo's raw seafood energy, Shaoxing's “stinky” and drunken extremes.

West Lake vinegar fish & Longjing shrimp (西湖醋鱼·龙井虾仁) · The twin peaks of Hangzhou cuisine at Louwailou Dongpo pork (东坡肉) · Yellow-wine braised — fat that isn't, Song-dynasty soul Ningbo tangyuan & seafood noodles (宁波汤圆·海鲜面) · Black-sesame balls and Xiangshan noodle bowls Shaoxing drunken chicken & stinky tofu (醉鸡·臭豆腐) · Wine-soaked and deep-fried extremes of Yue cooking Zhoushan seafood (舟山海鲜) · Raw-marinated roe crab and salt-pepper laternfish — best value after September Pian'erchuan & shrimp-eel noodles (片儿川·虾爆鳝面) · Hangzhou noodle royalty at Kuiyuan Guan
  • Low-chili, light cooking — gentle on stomachs
  • Vegetarian: Lingyin temple kitchen and a full gongdelin lineage
  • Seafood allergies: confirm noodle broths (shrimp/crab shells common)
